¿How does Los Patojos measure the success of the program?

We do not focus on the quantity of things, but rather the quality. Our program has an excellent human and social quality, the number of students involved is 110 children (girls and boys), which creates a great and respectful number in our community.

People are responsible and assist with no obligation at all to our projects and activities. Adults are studying English at night, mothers have created a support group, and the kitchen is offering healthy food for the children.

We have created a system where there is no dependency in terms of material objects to provide to the people, an educational system based on motivation, trust and love, so people can use that trust, love and motivation to better themselves.

The students have also improved their grades and personality at school.

Helping the others, helping each other is never charity, helping the others, helping each other is friendship, is solidarity.

¿What challenges have Los Patojos encountered?

  • The biggest challenge that we have encountered is the lack of motivation in society. Most of the children’s parents are losing their jobs. The parents are becoming desperate because they do not have a job and therefore their emotions are different; it is very hard to believe in second chances again.

  • The increase of violence in our country makes the children afraid to walk in the streets, to our program, school, church etc…

  • Children get sick and weak because they do not have access to food or medical assistance in their homes.

  • The old and radical conservative way of educating children, keep the new generations under social ignorance and fear of expressing ideas.

LOS PATOJOS PROJECTS

Los Patojos Educational Re-enforcement Project.

This project motivates the girls and boys students from the community to find happiness, fun, and confidence during their academic training. Los Patojos improves the education of children, integrating into society in a appropriate manner, responsible, and creative. LP strengthens the education and form constructively the personalities of the children living in environments of disintegrated families, in violent environments, and in dangerous streets of the community, etc.

English school for youths and adults:

The school’s project of English as a second language, is also one of the most important integrated program of Los Patojos.

The project is designed for young learners or adults (men and women) of the community, have the opportunity to learn free of charge the English language.

The ultimate goal is to facilitate academic tools for the community that generate more employment opportunities and study.

School for Parents- “Intergrating families with love and trust”:

For a long time, the authorities responsible for providing education to children and adolescents (schools, ngo’s, churches, etc…) encounter with a constant: that parents seem to abandoned almost completely the responsibility of this comprehensive training process of the children to these institutions, teachers and facilitators.

Through this project, we work with both parents as teachers in order to achieve more noble effect of the education: awakening the appetite for more education, of new learning and teaching, and learning to learn.

Project Youth- Studying our society:

The most important goal of Project Youth is to promote social participation of youth through research, analysis and audiovisual projection.

When social issues crucial to its human development and productive participation in the social environment is promoted and integrated to the youth, it prevents their involvment in antisocial and criminal groups, it prevents the increase in violence and motivates the youth to fight for a better future for themselves and for all of us that are part of this world.

Cultural and Community Festivals Los Patojos:

Our goal is to carry out the festival each year here in our municipality

of Jocotenango, Sacatepequez, celebrating and promoting the skills that the child and that many times cannot be demonstrated in other spaces, and this being a space suitable for also sharing with their parents and community. It is also a call to action for change, to improve the quality of life of our small children that are the joy of the adults.

Jocotenango can change. It can still be! We are going to start the rescue of our people through a festival that promotes the participation and the rights of all of us, we deserve to live in a place in peace, clean, and with many recreation and expression. The festival promotes the prevention of crime and all that destroys society. Through this festival, it generates environments of peace, love, learning, understanding and confidence.

Patojos Cultural Center Community (PCCC):

The PCCC is a free space where the art and culture are promoted in locally and professional to the community, especially

to children and youth. Theater, painting, drawing, music, recycling, audiovisual media, environment, are some of the issues in the PCCC that is conducted through workshops and courses.

The objective is to awaken and discover the talents and skills of childhood and youth by means of artistic education and the preparation of socio-cultural. We hope that the PCCC can also help integrate families and society by means of cultural activities that Los Patojos organize for the benefit of the community.

If the art and education liberates the people of ignorance, what are we waiting for?

The Com munity Kitchen:

Promoting t he r ight of food, education and the construction of peace in Jocotenango´s children.
Specific Object: Provide food to the children that need to eat and don’t have the access to a descent and heal th y nutrition at home.
One of the most important elements in children human development is nourishment, without this, any process of education, art or social integration will be
completely successful . A boy or a girl with hunger becomes a sad, unmotivated and weak human being. Human rights like : The right t olive, to a family, to nourishment and education are the most important human rights and they are our social commitment, our program objective and an important part of our philosophy. We promote, respect and defend Children rights, so they can understand as well what their obligations and responsibilities are in their families, schools and society.

The Women Cooperative:

With the idea of generating and promoting social businesses, LP created a woman cooperative conformed by mothers that have a tough and difficult life, they have been fighting and working hard to sustain their families and suffering discrimination just because they are women.

Through this cooperative, the women learn trough workshops and marketing classes how to create small businesses, how to work in team and how to believe in themselves. The cooperative creates books, agendas, diaries, photo albums and notebooks out of recycled materials, they also are learning graphic and design techniques to decorate their creations. Beautiful results, productive ideas and motivated women… Step by step, we are making life better.
